CHANDIGARH: Law caught hold of controversial Baba Deep Singh on his way to the house of justice on Friday. Members of UT polices special crime investigation cell (SCIC) claimed that they nabbed the head priest of gurdwara Santsar, Sector 38-West, following a tip-off. However, sources close to Deep Singh maintained that he was approaching the court to surrender when that happened.
UT police had been conducting raids at several places to nab him as well as chairman of gurdwaras trust, Swaroop Singh. Deep Singh will be produced in court on Saturday. UT police have obtained production warrant to bring Gurbhej Singh, whom Ludhiana (rural) police had arrested allegedly with 24.5 kg explosives last year. He will be brought here on March 9.
Ludhiana SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said police had found during interrogation that Gurbhej had been in touch with Swaroop Singh before his arrest. He is currently lodged in a Nabha jail. Swaroop Singh had allegedly assisted Gurbhej in procuring a passport through a fake ration card.
Meanwhile, Swaroop Singhs legal counsel Ramdeep Pratap Singh told TOI that gurdwara trust had removed Deep Singh from the post of head priest in a Wednesday night meeting. Gurbhej may have forged the documents on his own. Swaroop Singh and the trust have nothing to do with it, he said. He added, The interrogation report of an accused is not admissible in court. Why didnt the cops act on these inputs when they registered the case against Gurbhej.
UT police officials also stated that Gurbhej had revealed that Swaroop Singh had links with Khalistani militants settled in Germany and Italy. They said Swaroop Singh guided Gurbhej Singh in his actions.
